Why do we run this program?
As the climate crisis intensifies, more regions will see extreme weather conditions, including heat waves, storms, floods, and droughts that disrupt people’s lives and livelihoods. The impacts are most acutely felt in the regions that have least contributed to global warming, and where people have fewer resources and limited capacity to adapt.
Countries and communities need to prepare for a changing climate and environment with profound human consequences. Some people will leave areas adversely impacted by climate shocks to find shelter and opportunities elsewhere – and to support those who stay behind. Others may be reluctant to leave their homes and sever ties with their land, community, and heritage. Whether they stay or move, they face increased risks.
Creating opportunities for safe mobility that protect the agency and dignity of people as well as the integrity of communities can help reduce these risks and strengthen communities’ resilience in the face of climate change.
What are the project goals?
The GCCM aims to promote the agency of people and communities at the frontline and to enable people-centered and positive adaptation journeys that support their ability to stay, migrate, or relocate in dignity.
