Media Forum in the Chinese Silicon Valley

For the Media Forum China – Germany – USA, media representatives and editors-in-chief from the three countries got together in Shenzhen, the center of the Chinese high-tech industry. In the course of just forty years, Shenzhen has transformed from a fishing village into a dynamic and surprisingly open metropolis, with a young population and dynamic growth. Together with Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou, Shenzhen today forms China’s Greater Bay Area – an economic region with about 70 million inhabitants. Here the participants of the media forum discussed the technological race with Silicon Valley and the effects of the trade war.

Shenzhen has transformed from a fishing village into a dynamic and surprisingly open metropolis with 13 million inhabitants.

The participants of the media forum discussed current questions openly and without shying away from controversy: Will Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area replace Silicon Valley as the hotbed of the digital economy and innovation? How is the trade war between the USA and China affecting the development of these locations? Where does Germany stand in the race for future digital technologies? And how can the three countries work together to tackle pressing challenges such as climate change?

We asked participants from all three countries for their views on these issues. Listen to Ines Pohl, Deutsche Welle, Lois Kazakoff, San Francisco Chronicle, Tian Wei, Chinese CGTN, and Andreas Cichowicz, German broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk.
