A Safe Harbour?
The impacts of climate change are forcing an increasing number of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa to leave their homes. Many are moving to cities to build new lives, often settling in risk-prone areas. This means they can be affected repeatedly by climate change.
Addressing these risks requires better information about the destinations preferred by climate migrants. Environmental migration is complex, which means that solutions to the challenges posed by such mobility have to be developed in conjunction with and anchored in the local contexts of the affected populations. Given this imperative, we are supporting the Zolberg Institute and Slumdwellers International to develop an action plan to improve the situation of migrants in Africa’s coastal cities.
