Digital Livelihoods for Refugees

How to harness the opportunities of digital livelihoods

In recent years, digital livelihood programs focusing on employment and vocational training for displaced populations have expanded in refugee camps around the world. For refugees, they are seen as a way to connect to a modern world, generate a source of income, and avoid having to adopt less desirable ‘traditional’ livelihoods. In this brief, Hervé Nicolle, Founder and Director of Samuel Hall, explores the opportunities and limitations of digital livelihoods, specifically for vulnerable populations. The brief is part of the “Dialogue on Tech and Migration, DoT.Mig.” paper series by the “Migration Strategy Group”, an initiative by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Bertelsmann Foundation, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung.
