Programs for Political Decision-Makers

Today, elected representatives face immense pressure: they must make decisions in a complex, internationally interconnected world and amidst multiple crises - decisions whose consequences often extend far beyond their term in office. At the same time, they are under constant public scrutiny and particularly in the age of social media, frequently confronted with personal attacks.

Democracy itself is under pressure. In Germany and around the world, we are witnessing a growing loss of trust in political institutions and increasing alienation of many citizens from politics. Positions are becoming more polarized and there are calls for simple and quick political solutions.

These developments have also changed the political culture in parliament. The tone in debates is becoming harsher - even among democratic forces. This makes constructive, cross-party cooperation more difficult and paralyzes collective efforts to shape a sustainable democratic future.

This is where our program comes in: it creates spaces for a trusting exchange across party lines in order to find innovative and forward-looking solutions to the global challenges of our time.

“Policymaking in the 21st Century” enables the new generation of members of the German Bundestag to develop forward-looking and innovative policies in an increasingly fast-paced and globally interconnected world.

Participants strengthen their mandate-relevant competencies by innovative and interdisciplinary methods to develop anticipatory and sustainable solutions to complex challenges

During study trips, the parliamentarians gain insights into solutions and best practices from other countries, reflect on local and national challenges in a global context, and engage in dialogue on  current developments and trends with parliamentarians and experts from other countries.

Through joint reflection on their role as elected representatives in the 21st century and open discussion of pressing political issues in a trusting environment - beyond the daily routines of parliament and factional lines - the MPs build up a cross-party network.

Another focus in on strengthening personal resilience. Workshops on communication and managing public pressure support MPs in remaining effective and visible in the long-term - with the aim of continuing their political engagement beyond the current legislative period.

A program cycle spans one a legislative period and consists of the following components:

• Program launch in Berlin: Introduction to the program & getting to know the participants (evening event)
• Kick-off seminar: The role of parliamentarians in the 21st century (several days)
• Europe Workshop: Study trip to a European country (several days)
• Executive Education Seminar at a Public Policy School (USA) (several days)
• Study trip to the Global South (several days)
• Program conclusion: Reflection on the program and outlook
• Skills workshops in Berlin throughout the year
