About the project

The Center for Inclusive Policy (CIP) was created to bring together advocates, decision-makers, and researchers to work on improving policies and systems for people with disabilities. The goal is to make real, lasting changes by providing policy ideas, research, and support that focus on creating a more inclusive world.

CIP is a “think and do tank”. They come up with practical strategies to promote inclusion, test them, and put them into action, especially in the Global South. CIP collaborates with a variety of groups to push forward important changes in areas where fresh thinking, better knowledge, and clear communication can really improve the lives of people with disabilities. For example, CIP has helped shape ideas like inclusive social protection and disability-inclusive care systems. They've developed methods to understand the extra costs that people with disabilities face. Additionally, CIP has helped countries gather and analyze data on disabilities and mapped care programs worldwide to make them more accessible for people with disabilities. They also run a fellowship program to train the next generation of disability policy experts, particularly from the Global South.

CIP's team includes many people from the Global South, along with a diverse network of collaborators. They focus on the intersection of various factors like age, gender, race, and other aspects of identity to understand how disability affects people’s lives. Their ultimate vision is a world where all people with disabilities — regardless of who they are — can fully enjoy their rights, contribute to society, and benefit from inclusive development.

Why do we support CIP?

The entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2008 created global momentum to combat systemic inequalities faced by persons with disabilities and their families. As the interest and efforts to advance disability inclusion have increased, so has the need for technical expertise, frameworks, and tools to make the rights enshrined in the CRPD a reality.

What is the aim?

CIP’s goals include fostering sustainable, societal-level change, which simultaneously produces tangible attitudinal, behavioral, and situational progress for persons with disabilities and their families.

How does it work?

CIP supports national and international actors to implement public policies and development programs with the inclusion of persons with disabilities in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). CIP works through partnerships, integrating research, policy analysis, strategic thinking, capacity building, and communications to catalyze progress towards these goals.
