Right in the middle of the Rhine, the former customs area once separated the German district of Emmendingen from the French PETR Sélestat–Alsace Centrale. While border controls used to take place on the island, it has remained unused for decades — and that’s about to change.

With the project R(h)einforced Connections, part of the Common Ground initiative, the region set out to reimagine the island together with its citizens. The central question: What connects us when it comes to mobility, food, biodiversity, and energy?

The aim was not just to consult people, but to actively involve them in shaping the district partnership. A variety of participatory formats were launched — from cross-border climate brunches to guided walks where citizens, politicians, and experts developed ideas on how to improve mobility on both sides of the river.

Numerous ideas also emerged for the Rhine island itself — ranging from recreational spaces to restaurants and tourism offerings. These proposals are now being reviewed by the regional authorities.
