Narrating, talking, writing or translating: Language is always both an access point to and an indicator of participation in society. Our project, “Weltenschreiber – Das Literaturvermittlungsprogramm für Kinder und Jugendliche” (Writers of Worlds – A Creative Writing Program for Children and Adolescents), aims to introduce young people to artistic forms of expression as a means to actively participate in society. The program focuses on methods of creative writing, which can strengthen linguistic abilities and self-expression, as well as (self-)reflection and empathy for different mindsets and behaviors. Furthermore, creative writing helps children and adolescents to develop their own opinions. From 2018 until 2022, the program will be run at the literature associations in Rostock and Stuttgart, and the Literary Center Göttingen. Each of these institutions, located in three different German federal states, cooperates closely with five schools of different levels in order to offer young people one- to two-year writing workshops. Well-known authors teach creative writing as an integral part of the regular German curriculum. The 18-month teacher training, organized and hosted by the literature associations concurrently with the writing workshops, bases on the well-established model of the Literaturpädagogisches Zentrum Stuttgart (Center for Literature Education Stuttgart).
