Why are we running this project?
Thomas Mann House
Thomas Mann build a house in Pacific Palisades / Los Angeles in 1942 that became the place for his artistic and creative work during his exile in the United States. It was also a space for exchange with international scholars, artists and intellectuals of the time. The Federal Foreign Office of Germany purchased the Thomas Mann House in November 2016 in order to preserve it as a place for debates and to bring it back to life.
What are our goals?
A Place for Debates on the Essential Issues of the Present and the Future
The Thomas Mann House serves as a place where, in the spirit of Thomas Mann, debates are initiated, which deal with the issues of the present and the future on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2018, a residency program in form of fellowships was started at the Thomas Mann House that addresses intellectuals and thinkers from all areas of German society, especially from the areas of science, economics, culture, politics and media. The program offers the fellows an opportunity to take a stand in regard to the fundamental questions of our time and to enter into debates and exchanges with personages and institutions in the United States. At the same time, the house is also a place of remembrance of Thomas Mann's time in exile. The residency program is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the Federal Government commissioner for Culture and Media as well as by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung and the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung. Dr. Armen Avanessian, Dr. Damian Borth, Prof. Dr. Ilse Helbrecht, Prof. Dr. Stefan Keppler-Tasaki , Burghart Klaußner, Prof. Dr. Frido Mann, Andreas Platthaus, Prof. Dr. Andreas Reckwitz, Dr. Lisa Riedner have been selected as Thomas Mann Fellows for 2019.
How does the project work?
Thomas Mann Fellowship
Starting in 2018, there will be an annual open call for applications for the Thomas Mann Fellowships, and an expert panel will then select the fellows from the received applications. At the center of the fellowship lies the realization of a concrete transatlantic project, which deals with the essential questions of our time. The duration of a fellowship lasts from 3 months up to 10 months.
