About the project
For more than ten years, the Youth Debating Competition has been supporting linguistic and political education alongside the development of personality and critical thinking. To date, more than 175,000 students and 7,000 teachers at nearly 1,000 schools across Germany have taken part in the project.
The core of the project is a nationwide competition which is open to students from all school types and divided into two age categories: grades 8-10 and 11-13. Debating means adopting a point of view, stating your reasons, and expressing criticism, whether competitively or constructively. Each one of these skills is important in today's communication-based society.
The project under the patronage of the Federal President is run jointly by the Hertie Foundation in partnership with the Mercator Stiftung, Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It is designed to bring rhetoric and high-level linguistic expression into the classroom, practice democratic behavior and impart students and teachers alike with communication skills through rhetorical training.
