Insights into Islamic Communities as Municipal Stakeholders
About the project
Islamic communities provide their members with advice that goes well beyond religious issues: they help them, for example, deal with government agencies and provide support in terms of school-related issues. In order to support them in this function, the Goethe-Institut, in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, offers a skill-enhancement seminar for approximately 100 dedicated members of Islamic communities. At the seminars held in Hamburg, Essen, Mannheim, Hamm, and Ingolstadt, they have the opportunity to discuss relevant issues with other community activists and, if desired, improve their language skills.
As experts on activities carried out by Islamic communities, the project’s participants are invited to take part in deciding on the seminar’s topics and play a role in shaping them. In this context, personal conversations and direct contact with responsible individuals and decision makers as well as municipal authorities and institutions play an important role. This means that the project improves the quality of discussions between Islamic communities and municipal organizations and, as such, has an effect far beyond the individual training offered.
