Theater-Transfer (TT) Transfert Théâtral
German-French workshop for translators of contemporary stage plays
Translators play a key role in fostering the exchange within the contemporary theater scene in French and German speaking countries. Theater-Transfer has been dedicated to this exchange since 1999: Since the beginning, there have been annual stipends; in 2015, a regular translators’ workshop was initiated. The latest addition, in 2017, was a mentoring program in which experienced translators support workshop participants until they have completed their translations.
The multi-day workshop always takes place during a theater festival in France or Germany. It brings together around 12 specialized translators, encouraging them to discuss current trends in the German and French theater landscape and the specific challenges of translating stage plays. Led by Laurent Muhleisen and Frank Weigand, participants discuss the translations they are working on. They also have a chance to meet industry experts, such as publishers, critics, and dramaturges, and learn about funding opportunities and existing professional networks.
The workshops are hosted by the Goethe-Institut in Paris and the Institut français d’Allemagne / Bureau du Théâtre et de la Danse in cooperation with the DVA-Stiftung, the Association Beaumarchais SACD, and Maison Antoine Vitez.
