Symposium on translation in the humanities and social sciences
Since 2015, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH), together with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and supported by the DVA-Stiftung, has hosted an annual three-day symposium in Paris. The event, aimed at “supporting and promoting international networking among translators in the humanities and social sciences,” brings together about 20 full-time and part-time professionals who translate from German to French and vice versa.
The project aims to initiate a professional exchange between translators of French and German in the humanities and social sciences in order to support high-quality translations in the field. The symposium participants are given the opportunity to gather information on funding, exchange ideas, and establish long-term networks. Interactive workshops and panel discussions provide professional impetus while evening events address a wider audience, focusing on the important role of translators as key communicators in the intercultural dialog.
The symposium has given rise to the Dedalus online platform, which sees itself as a lab to reflect on, practice, and celebrate translation. It presents texts that make translation itself the subject of discussion in their production method and form. Therefore, the project’s key focus is on the knowledge (or non-knowledge) created by translating the original into the target language. The platform aims to express the experience of thinking in several languages and to challenge the rigidity of existing forms of knowledge.
