Women continue to be seriously underrepresented in leadership positions in academia and the sciences. Only 21% of the professorships with the highest endowments are held by women throughout the EU; in some countries, for instance in Germany, the proportion is even smaller (19%). Nowadays, there is a consensus in politics and academia that the small number of women in leadership positions represents an untapped potential. Research institutes want more women on their boards and in leadership positions. There is a lack of appropriate tools, though, for quickly finding women academics who are suitable and very good. The Robert Bosch Stiftung, Spektrum der Wissenschaft and Nature hope to provide just such a tool with AcademiaNet. The goal of the project is to use this site to bring excellent female academics to the attention of those who sit on academic boards, hold executive positions, report on research, are responsible for conference planning, or who require an expert’s opinion when making decisions. Articles on “Women in Research” and success stories about the female researchers in the database are also published on the site.
