Prize for political rap talent show RAPutation
When it comes to civic education, the Robert Bosch Stiftung is focusing on formats outside of the traditional classroom
Stuttgart, April 18, 2013 - Last night, the media initiative DU HAST DIE MACHT (YOU HAVE THE POWER) received the European CIVIS Online Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity, which comes with an endowment of 3,000 euros, at ARD’s studio in Berlin. The prize was awarded for the multimedia talent show RAPutation, where young people use rap to make political statements. The goal of the media initiative YOU HAVE THE POWER, founded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and UFA Film & TV Produktion, is to introduce young people to political issues using creative online and social media formats like RAPutation and get them involved in social discourse. Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is a further supporter.
"Young people are definitely interested in politics and want to play a role," says Dr. Ingrid Hamm, executive director of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, "but through their channels and with their issues. They feel at home on social media and online platforms. When you reach them there as successfully as RAPutation does, you create a sense of political involvement that catches on." The jury from the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity praised RAPutation as "highly political, technically outstanding, and emotionally impressive." More than 100 different Web sites from around the European Union and Switzerland participated in the competition.
Young musicians between 14 and 24 years of age were called on to upload self-produced songs with a political message to www.raputation-casting.tv. The ten best applicants then had to complete musical assignments, including composing a "Message to Merkel" and their own personal political campaign ad for 2013. The competition was complemented by video interviews with rap stars and politicians for the show’s blog. The 22-year-old Drob Dynamic was voted Germany’s most political rapper. In his songs, the aspiring social worker from Neukölln primarily criticizes the closing of numerous youth clubs and recreation centers, particularly in Berlin’s inner-city districts.
In addition to YOU HAVE THE POWER, the Robert Bosch Stiftung is also involved in countless other civic education projects. With "Dialog Sets Precedents" and "Jugend debattiert - Youth Debating Competition," the Foundation raises young people’s awareness of politics and political involvement. The "Learning in Stadiums" project uses young people’s love of soccer to get them interested in politics and strengthen their social skills.
