Hearing Before the US Senate: Russia and Germany's Elections
How much of an impact does Russia have on democratic elections in Europe? And what can we expect for the upcoming German federal elections? These questions were the focus of a US Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in June. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution, testified as an expert for the situation in Germany.

On June 28, Constanze Stelzenmüller testified before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on the Russian interference on the upcoming German federal elections, discussing how Europeans should deal with Russia's attempts to influence European polities. She explained German-Russian relations and talked about how Russian propaganda could have an influence on elections, for example by speading fake news on social media. She also explained Germany's countermeasures in preparation for possible interferences and highlighted the value of Transatlantic coopeartion when it comes to this issue.
As Robert Bosch Senior Fellow, Constanze Stelzenmüller explores Germany’s role in Europe and its influence on European politics and business. With this as a goal, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the American think tank The Brookings Institution have placed a new focus on Germany at The Brookings Institution.
Through publications and at events, the Fellow gives American decision makers and the general public a better understanding of economic, social, and domestic policy trends in Germany and Europe as well as German views on the relationship between the two countries - this is an urgent task, as shown by the current debate regarding transatlantic relations.
Im November 2014 lawyer and political commentator Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller has assumed her post as Robert Bosch Senior Fellow. Her focus areas are: transatlantic relations, German foreign policy, NATO, the EU’s foreign, security and defense policies, international law, and human rights. Until she took on her position as Robert Bosch Senior Fellow, Dr. Stelzenmüller has been a Senior Transatlantic Fellow of The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). In this function, among other things, she headed the Transatlantic Trends program, an annual study on public opinion in the US and Europe.
