Supporting Struggling Schools in High-Need Neighborhoods

Perspektiven für Schule in kritischer Lage
Some schools in Germany, especially in high-need areas with a majority of students from low socio-economic status households, face enormous challenges. Those who manage to effectively support their students in reaching the best possible learning outcomes contribute considerably to equality of opportunity. Conversely, there is the risk of a widening gap and leaving students behind if a school does not manage to provide the necessary quality of teaching and learning.
Offering better opportunities for education and life also means helping schools do better in high-need neighborhoods. The Robert Bosch Stiftung is working together with actors in the local educational landscape to develop effective strategies for struggling schools. In 2013 we launched "School Turnaround", a joint initiative together with the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family Affairs. The overall goal is to have the participating ten schools on the right path toward turnaround by 2017.
We initiate and build networks particularly for representatives of German school administrations, superintendents and pilot projects to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the expansion of required skills to effectively support struggling schools in Germany. Our long-term goal is to enable systems to provide schools with tailored support at an early stage of their struggle.
In doing so, we are looking to other education systems and countries for inspiration and adapt their lessons learned to the German context.
We are active in the following projects
