Institute for the History of Medicine of the Robert Bosch Stiftung

The Institut für Geschichte der Medizin der Robert Bosch Stiftung (IGM), the Foundation's Institute for the History of Medicine, was founded in 1980 and is the only non-university research institute for the history of medicine in Germany. Originally affiliated with the Robert-Bosch-Krankenhaus, the Foundation's hospital, as a research facility for the history of medicine, the institute owes its existence to Robert Bosch's keen interest in the history of the health services and homeopathy. Today, the institute's equipment and research mandate are equal to those of departments of history of medicine at German universities. The institute focuses on the social history of medicine and history of homeopathy. In both areas, the research concentrates on patient histories.

The IGM also has a research library with over 50,000 volumes and a homeopathy archive which preserves the legacies of Samuel Hahnemann and some of his important students and successors, especially Clemens von Bönninghausen. The archive also contains documents of international and national homeopathy organizations.
