I Want Europe

Which Europe for Germany?

Together with the Mercator Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, and the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe, Germany’s president Joachim Gauck held the "I Want Europe - and to Play a Role Shaping It" Bellevue Forum. During the day-long citizens’ conference, around 100 ambassadors of the "I Want Europe" campaign develop ideas for a Europe that will remain viable over the long term.

Over 800 German citizens participated by submitting a personal statement as an ambassador of the "I Want Europe" campaign. Last year the Committed Europeans, a group of 11 German foundations, promoted Europe’s values and accomplishments in the media and online using these statements. President Joachim Gauck was the campaign’s patron.

More Information

The initiative “I Want Europe” was launched by the Mercator Foundation and the Robert Bosch Stiftung to convey the benefits and achievements of the European Union for Germany. Within the scope of the initiative, celebrities and citizens (“ambassadors”) from the worlds of politics, sports, culture, and society publicly declare their belief in the European idea in television ads and advertisements. They declare their personal commitment to Europe.

As “ambassadors,” famous Germans such as former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, former EU Commissioner Günter Verheugen, CEO of Daimler AG Dieter Zetsche, Gesine Schwan, president of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance, climate researcher Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Philipp Lahm, captain of the German national soccer team, actress Bettina Zimmermann, DJ Paul van Dyk, TV show host Ina Müller, and folk music star Florian Silbereisen all say: “I Want Europe.” German President Joachim Gauck has taken on the role of sponsor. The kick-off event was held in Berlin on August 23, 2012.

“I Want Europe” is an initiative by the “Engagierte Europäer” (“Committed Europeans”) under the leadership of the Mercator foundation and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The “Engagierte Europäer” comprises a group of 11 German foundations that champion for a strong Europe. The initiative is being supported by countless media companies that are providing TV, print, and online advertising space.
