Havelland Agentur für bürgerschaftliches Engagement (Center for Civic Involvement)
13,000 euros

The Havelland district trained 28 senior citizen coaches as part of the national "Experience for Initiatives" program (EFI). The senior citizens have initiated more than 40 projects in Rathenow, Nauen, Rhinow and other towns in the district. The projects include construction consulting for special needs housing, residential buildings for the elderly, visiting services for residents of nursing homes, development and management of the day care program of the regional gardening exhibition, computer training for young and old, and activities in the psychiatric outpatient clinic in Nauen and the day clinic in Premnitz. "Weg der Vernunft" ("Path of Reason") is a project devoted to preventing violence in schools and everyday life. "Hirn statt Masse" ("Brain, not Brawn") is the watchword with which the project aims to encourage children and young people to use their free time productively and the public to pay attention to them. Senior citizens look after small groups of children, giving them individual care and offering relaxation exercises and creative activities.

To maintain and develop the wide range of volunteer activities, the Agentur für Bürgerschaftliches Engagement was founded as a social coordinating body. It is located in the Wohn- und Pflegezentrum West-Havelland. A full time manager and four volunteers form the competence team which organizes the different activities into four main groups: Information Technology, Ongoing Education, Public Relations, and Organization.

It should be noted that this project conducts pioneering work in former East Germany, where only about 20% of the population are involved in volunteer work compared to one third in the west.
