Preise für Modellprojekte "Zukunft Alter":
"Nie da gewesene Freiräume für produktives Handeln nutzen"

Baden-Baden – 13 October 2006

The Otto Mühlschlegel Preis 2006 – Zukunft Alter – endowed with 13,000 euros was awarded to Westhavelland, a residential care centre in Rathenow. Today, the Robert Bosch Stiftung honored eight projects in Baden-Baden with prizes worth 50,000 euros. All projects are models showing how the elderly can contribute their skills and commitment to sustaining strong communities. Under the slogan "Know, Be Able and Act", 160 initiatives applied  for the prize in its second year.

Dieter Berg, Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch Stiftung said:
"Improved health has increased life expectancy, creating completely new freedom and space in society for productive activity, to which the knowledge, ability and skills of the elderly can make an important contribution."

With the Otto Mühlschlegel Prize, the Robert Bosch Stiftung seeks to address the challenge of demographic change and showcase initiatives that highlight the opportunities and positive forms of life for the elderly in society.

The jury also commended the Kompetenzzentrum Havelland – Agentur für Bürgerschaftliches Engagement, a volunteer training center run by senior citizens, for its pioneering work in the area of civic involvement, specifically in eastern Germany, where only one fifth of the population is involved in volunteer work (compared to one third in the west). As part of the federal program “Expertise for Initiatives (EFI)”, an operational structure for senior citizens’ civic involvement was set up in the Havelland district. The elderly volunteers have since launched more than 40 projects in a many different fields.

Three projects enabling senior citizens to use their experience and skills to create better opportunities for younger people were awarded 7,500 euros each. STARTklar is a project run by the integration services department of the city of Stuttgart, in which senior citizens partner with secondary school pupils to help them start out on their career. The Ökologische Schullandheim Licherode, Alheim, developed a certificate in environmental training for senior citizens that provides them with the opportunity for continuing education and the chance to pass on their knowledge in schools and nursery schools. The "Seniorpartner in School e.V." initiative received 7,500 euros for its bridge-building between generations outside the family. The volunteer senior citizens act as mediators in constructive handling of conflict situations in schools.

The Robert Bosch Stiftung focus area "Age and Demography" presents positive examples and supports model projects for an active life in old age with volunteer activities. Since 2002, Robert Bosch Stiftung has administered the funds of the Otto und Edith Mühlschlegel Stiftung. The Otto Mühlschlegel Prize honors the personality and life of service of Otto Mühlschlegel, industrialist and donator, and continues the work of his foundation. It is awarded biannually with changing mottos.
