Frankfurt Book Fair 2017

To mark France being the Guest of Honor country at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2017, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and its associated DVA-Stiftung presented the "Dialogue of Ideas" at the book fair. This series of events focused on German-French translators who, besides the authors, play one of the most key roles in the literary world.

From October 11 to 15, 2017, the event series presented visitors to the book fair with a range of panel discussions involving translators who specialize in anything from literary fiction to cartoons. "Dialogue of Ideas" was organized in cooperation with the Institut français d’Allemagne and was co-hosted together with "Frankfurt in French." Also returning to the Frankfurt Book Fair this year was the "Crossing Borders" program, featuring authors who have immersed themselves into other cultures on their travels and have written about their experiences in their literary works.

Robert Bosch Stiftung"s translation funding

The Robert Bosch Stiftung has been supporting professional translators from and into German for over a decade. Besides grants given by the DVA-Stiftung, the "Literary Bridge Builders" program recognizes professional literary translators who work at the highest quality level and consider themselves intermediaries between cultures. From 2018 onward, the Foundation will make networking as well as the mobility and visibility of translators a greater priority with a new program, "TOLEDO – Translators for Cultural Exchange."

"Quality, not quantity"

To honor her accomplishments in supporting translators, Maja Pflüger, Deputy Head at the Foundation, will receive the 2017 Übersetzerbarke (Translators’ Barque) at the Frankfurt Book Fair. We asked her about the Foundation’s current and future projects in promoting translation.
