War in Peace

International Drama Lab 2017/2018

Lately it has been increasingly observed, in both domestic and international affairs, how hate culture is being nurtured for the purpose of substantiating claims to power. The peaceful coexistence of many is being jeopardized by the interests of the few through staged conflicts, and escalated into (civil) war. War has become a fluid concept, ever-present even in times of peace.

The International Drama Lab gives renowned playwrights a space bridging languages and nationalities to write, reflect, and develop ideas around current social issues. From spring 2017 through summer 2018, Ebru Nihan Celkan (Istanbul), Sivan Ben Yishai (Tel Aviv), Anastasya Kosodyi (Saporischschja), and Mehdi Moradpour (Berlin) will focus on topics that relate to "War in Peace". Starting with a writing lab at the Literary Colloquium Berlin and exchange forums with civil society activists in Turkey, Israel and Ukraine, they will investigate the following questions: For whom does the peace in their country mean war? Which wars are not being talked about? What part do the arts play in times of change?

The founders of the NIDS New Institute for Drama, Maxi Obexer and Sasha Marianna Salzmann, will serve as facilitators of the collaboration between the playwrights. The resulting works shall be presented in dramatic readings at the Future of Europe Festival 2018 at Schauspiel Stuttgart and during the 2018/19 season opening at the Maxim Gorki Theater’s Studio Я.

"War in Peace" is a collaborative project of Literarisches Colloquium Berlin, the Maxim Gorki Theater, the NIDS New Institute for Drama, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, supported by Schauspiel Stuttgart.
