NGO Capacity-Building in South Asia

The South Asian NGO sector is in a state of rapid change. New forms of philanthropy, new technical challenges and, in some cases, drastically increased funding require a greater commitment to capacity-building for South Asian NGOs and social businesses. The Social Impact Leadership Program supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and run by the Mumbai-based partner organization Dasra tries to fill this gap. It aims to strengthen and professionalize civil society actors in South Asia by providing a special training to NGO leaders and managers as well as social entrepreneurs. They get equipped with the necessary skills to effectively develop and manage their organizations, expand their networks, and connect with potential funders.

Over the course of one year, up to fifty managers from civil society organizations take part in four one-week modules in Mumbai. The curriculum of these modules is developed in cooperation with the Harvard Business School. Participants work on case studies on topics such as ‘Leadership and strategy’, ‘Developing your own organization’, ‘Building your own brand’, and ‘Sustainability and legacy’.

High-profile speakers from business and the social sector add their practical experience to the modules. Further, an online portal ensures continued learning and exchange in between the modules. Every spring, at the Dasra Philanthropy Week in Mumbai, some of the NGOs present their work to potential funders.
