We Mourn the Loss of Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt

A man of his word - both during and after his time in office. Even once his frontline political career was over, former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt took a keen interest in the issues dear to his heart, one of which was European integration.

"We Europeans can only stake our place in the world by staying united. Only by staying united can we assert our values of freedom, peace, and justice. European integration is in Germany’s own interest and in the interest of all European peoples. That is why we have to fight for Europe - with our hearts, our minds, and with respect for each other," said Schmidt in 2012 as part of the Foundation’s "I Want Europe" campaign.

As a partner of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, Helmut Schmidt also campaigned to build bridges between Germany and China. At the Magnet China event and the 2011 China–Germany Media Forum, he made an emphatic call for greater understanding of China as an emerging world power.

With his eloquence and decisiveness, Helmut Schmidt did more than pretty much anyone else to shape modern Germany. We are mourning the loss of a great European and a true democrat. We will miss his words immensely.
