T.O.M. - Training on the Move - Indo-German School Partnerships in Vocational Education

In the field of vocational education, there are very few opportunities for apprentices to acquire intercultural skills by means of an international exchange program and thus gain valuable experience that will stand them in good stead for their future careers. The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan in New Delhi are filling the gap with a pilot project to promote partnerships between vocational schools in India and Germany: T.O.M. - Training on the Move.

With the help of the Internet, the apprentices on the two vocational school tandem programs for the 2015–2016 academic year will spend ten to 12 months working online on a practical project they have chosen together. Having formed an Indo–German group (composed of up to seven students and one teacher from each country), they will come to grips with machine technology and the development of mechatronic systems. Over the course of two ten-day exchange trips, the students attend lessons at the host school, work on their project, and visit local businesses. The Bavarian-Indian Centre for Business and University Cooperation (BayInd) supports the schools on behalf of the Robert Bosch Stiftung during the application procedure and the project work.

Thanks to this support of vocational school partnerships, the apprentices gain an insight into the international competitive environment and the training system of the other country. By working together on a shared project, they not only acquire specialist knowledge, but also learn how to apply it in a global context.
