"Wow! I Like Your Ideas!"

EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard praises the Young Ideas for Europe European Action Plan 2013

On Monday the 27th of January, a delegation of Young Ideas for Europe participants from 10 EU Member States came to Brussels to hand over their European Action Plan 2013 to EU decision makers. First they discussed their ideas with members of the Cabinet of EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik, before meeting European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard.

Rosalinde van der Vlies, Deputy Head of Cabinet for Commissioner Potočnik praised the ideas put forward by the youngsters "I am very impressed with your ideas - having listened to you I have a lot more faith in the future of Europe!". At the meeting, the delegates were able to discuss intensively their ideas, pose questions and find out more about the work of the Commission. Ms. Elena Višnar Malinovská, responsible for coordination with Energy and Climate Action Policy in the Commissioner’s Cabinet, also met with the group. She shared insights from the 2030 framework for climate and energy policies presented by the Commission last week.

In the afternoon the Young Ideas for Europe delegation then met with EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard. The Commissioner praised the youngsters for their ideas, their discipline, and agreed "that Europe can and should do better". Picking up on the idea from the European Action Plan of making environmental protection cool, she asked the youngsters to help her and the Commission to achieve this. She also urged the European delegates to support Europe’s efforts in climate protection: "I would like you to go home and help - we need strong young voices in Member States".

The day finished with a visit to the European Parliament and a meeting with the office of Tanja Fajon, a patron of Young Ideas for Europe. A presentation of the work of an MEP and a guided tour through the European Parliament helped bring the institution and its work to life. The delegates were both impressed and honored by the insights shared with them and by the time they had to discuss their ideas with European decision makers.
