Geriatrics as a Field of Study and Treatment at University Medical Departments

The Robert Bosch Stiftung has been committed to strengthening the academic field of geriatrics in Germany for over ten years. The Foundation is striving to make geriatrics a fixed part of academic medicine at German universities, including treatment of patients, research, and education. To accomplish this goal, the Foundation is going to assist three universities in Germany in establishing a chair for geriatrics. Heidelberg University is the first location establishing such an endowed chair focused on health care for the elderly with our support.

The Foundation is currently accepting applications for the next round of start-up funding of up to 1.25 million euros over five years for the establishment of a new chair or the significant expansion of an existing structure at a university medical department. Interested universities can apply in writing by May 9, 2014. Please take note of our guidelines for submitting applications (available in the “Downloads” section).

After compiling a short list of promising candidates, we will invite the representatives of these universities to Berlin on June 10, 2014, to personally present their proposals. When making the final selection, the Foundation will receive support from a group of notable experts led by Professor Ernst Theodor Rietschel. By providing a university with this initial financing, our goal for the endowed chair for geriatrics is to use its research expertise, the quality of its findings, and the number of its publications to encourage other universities to follow suit.
