Nellja Veremej was born in Maikop, Russia, in 1963. She has lived and worked in Berlin as a caretaker for the elderly, Russian teacher, journalist, and writer since 1994. Nellja Veremej is being honored for her first novel, Berlin liegt im Osten (2013), which is in many ways related to Alfred Döblin’s work. The jury said the following about this selection: "Her fast-paced profile of the German capital tells – in a rawly realistic and at the same time poetically melancholy manner – of being a stranger in the big city, unachieved dreams, and unimagined moments of happiness."
