Engaging With China "China's Future - Assessing the State of the People's Republic on the Eve of the 19th Communist Party Congess"

September 28, 2017, 6 pm, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Französische Straße 32, Berlin
Together with the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) we warmly invite you to China im Gespräch / Engaging With China - Special Edition "China’s Future - Assessing the State of the People’s Republic on the Eve of the 19th Communist Party Congress" with David Shambaugh, Willy Lam, and Kristin Shi-Kupfer.

The event will take place in English and will be followed by a small reception.

About the Topic of the Evening:
China's future constitutes one of the most crucial issues in international relations today. The country has reached a critical juncture in its development: While China’s economy develops dynamically as the government pushes for innovation and digitization, debt levels are rising, environmental pollution is severe and social and regional disparities are unresolved. Amidst all these challenges, China’s current president Xi Jinping has accumulated more power than any other leader since Mao Zedong and has worked to harden Communist Party rule by strictly enforcing anti-corruption and political compliance. In a few weeks, the Communist Party will hold its 19th party congress in Beijing, the most important political event in five years, to confirm or replace incumbent party leaders. Our panel will discuss the following questions: What are the main challenges that China currently faces? What vision for the country does president Xi Jinping pursue? How successful has Xi consolidated his power, how much support has he gathered for his agenda among China’s elites as well as society? And what are the prospects and potential implications of the 19th Communist Party Congress for China’s future?
