Franco-German Year Kicks Off

Half a century ago, former French President Charles de Gaulle held his historic speech to the German youth at Ludwigsburg Palace. It is considered an important step on the path to the Treaty of Friendship between Germany and France, which set the seal on the unparalleled reconciliation in the heart of Europe. On the day before the official 50th anniversary celebration with Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande, German Minister of State Michael Georg Link and French Ambassador Maurice Gourdault-Montagne kicked off the Franco-German Year at a press conference held at the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Over the course of the coming months, several hundred events will be held in both countries in honor of Franco-German relations.

After the press conference, the delegation traveled to Ludwigsburg, where high-school and college students from seven European countries were waiting. They had developed concrete European policy recommendations within the scope of the "It’s Our Europe" forum, which were presented to the German and French politicians in attendance that evening.
