Forum Media and Development

Free and independent media play a key role in fostering and maintaining liberal democracies, by representing not only the political and business elite but also giving voice to NGOs and social institutions. Particularly in countries that undergo transformation processes, it is crucial to ensure freedom of speech and support independent media structures.

The Forum Media and Development is a network of German-speaking institutions and experts that address current issues regarding cooperation in media development. The Forum promotes dialogue among media, politics, academia, and civil society both in German-speaking regions and on an international level and thus facilitates a platform for sharing best-practice models, analyses, and development approaches. Promoting networking among media-relevant actors and incorporating the latest developments into scholarly discourse are important objectives of media and journalism programs of the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

Once a year, the Forum Media and Development hosts an international symposium. In October 2013, the event was organized by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The topic was “Promoting Alternative Views in a Multipolar World: BRICS and Their Evolving Role in Developing Media Markets.”

The 2014 symposium focused on “Audience Research” and was hold at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut (GSI) in Bonn on November 6 and 7, 2014. The Catholic Media Council (CAMECO) has organized the event.

Along with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and CAMECO, Forum Media and Development member institutes include Deutsche Welle Akademie, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the International Institute for Journalism of the German Society of International Cooperation, Media in Cooperation and Transition, the n-ost Network for Reporting on Eastern Europe, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and Reporters Without Borders.
