The Health and Science program area develops initiatives to help overcome the challenges facing today’s health care sector due to demographic changes and dwindling resources. Training qualified employees, dealing with chronic illnesses, and using the potential offered by an increased life expectancy all represent important approaches to providing support in this field. With its science activities the program area supports individuals with a talent for science in order to make the most of Germany’s scientific potential, and aims at improving the conditions for outstanding scientific achievement by supporting science communication. Furthermore, the program area also assists the Foundation’s own institutions, such as the Robert Bosch Hospital, the Dr. Margarete Fischer-Bosch Institute for Clinical Pharmacology, and the Institute for the History of Medicine.

Outlook on Health in Germany and Europe

Europe’s health care systems are facing significant challenges as a result of increasingly scarce human and financial resources, changes in demographics, and the growing number of chronically ill patients. The Foundation plays a significant role in overcoming these challenges with its initiatives to improve the training and education of health care specialists and their collaboration with one another. Strengthening the exchange of information and ideas between health care professionals at the European level is also another focus of the Foundation’s activities in this area.

Living as a Senior Citizen

The term "demographic change" has been in use for many decades. Originally thought of as an abstract idea, today it is a part of everyday life. The Robert Bosch Stiftung’s support in this area helps us recognize senior citizens’ potential and strengthen their active role in society. The Foundation’s support is similarly focused on the special health care and nursing needs of people that require assistance in old age and towards the end of their lives.

Strengthening Science in Germany and Europe

Germany cannot allow its potential in the field of scientific research to go untapped. In this regard, supporting women in research plays just as important a role as supporting aspiring young researchers. Furthermore, the Foundation also supports Europe-wide networking of top researchers, scientific politicians, and scientific journalists for the purpose of discussing past experiences and new ideas.

School and Science

The Foundation relies on networks of schools and universities to spark students’ interest in research and science. It cooperates and conducts project partnerships with numerous institutions, which have for many years allowed students to work on authentic research projects. With its prize "School Meets Science" the Robert Bosch Stiftung recognizes projects, in which the cooperation between scientists, teachers and students is especially successful.

Institutes of the Robert Bosch Stiftung

Today the Foundation’s institutes include the Robert Bosch Hospital in Stuttgart, founded by Robert Bosch in 1940, the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology founded by his daughter Margarete Fischer-Bosch, and the Institute for the History of Medicine, which was founded in 1980. The focus of these institutes’ clinical care and scientific work is on customized treatment plans tailored to the individual patient.
