Robert Bosch Stiftung Presents the Study “Kinderwünsche in Deutschland”

Study on couples’ desire to have families. 80 percent of women who want to have children say that supportive family policies increase the birth rate

In Germany, one in four men and one in seven women (but only one in seventeen in former East Germany) want to remain childless. On average, men want to have only 1.59 children, while women want 1.75. These are the lowest figures of all European countries. The number of children actually born (1.37 children per woman) is even lower. This is the result of a study conducted by the German Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung. In 2005, 10,000 people in Germany were interviewed about their attitudes to children, the status of families, and their expectations as regards government family policies.

"Kinderwünsche in Deutschland" is the third study within the foundation’s focus area on the Family and Demographic Change.
