Robert Bosch Fellowships at EDAM’s Cyber Policy Program

The internet and social media are among the most important modes of communication in Turkey, even for debates on political and societal topics. Now more than half of the population makes use of these options - and the trend is growing. How are aspiring nations like Turkey dealing with topics such as freedom and protection of privacy on the Internet, data security, and cyber security?

In order to address these questions, the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM) is establishing a cyber policy program. As part of the program, the Robert Bosch Stiftung is supporting young academics and researchers in order to enhance the expertise on this subject and to make connections with European institutions. This will help the Turkish perspective in the global debate on cyber policy to be taken into account. How this debate influences political decisions and the societal discourse in Turkey will also be investigated.

Over the next three years, the Robert Bosch Stiftung will award three 12-month fellowships at EDAM’s Cyber Policy Program to young Turkish academics and researchers. They will spend the first six months of their fellowship at a renowned European think tank such as the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, Estonia. Subsequently, they will work on the development of the Cyber Policy Program at EDAM and publish the results of their research.

With their work, the fellows are contributing to making the most up-to-date information regarding cyber policy available to the interested public in Turkey and, over the longer term, to this information becoming part of a well-informed discourse.

The fellowship program is an undertaking of the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM) think tank in Istanbul.
