"We Can Be Proud of Our Model"

José Manuel Barroso Spoke in Berlin about the European Union

On November 9, 2011, about 900 visitors to the Haus der Berliner Festspiele listened intently to the nearly hour-long speech by José Manuel Durao Barroso, the president of the European Commission. And Barroso did not mince his words, stating that even though Europe is currently in a precarious situation, with some showing skepticism towards the European Union, the European model and the model of the social market economy need to be defended. "We can be proud of our model," Barroso said. "This model deserves to be defended and enhanced. In doing so, we also need to ensure that Europe remains prosperous. That is why we need to make it more competitive. We need more economic convergence and discipline, and we need to complement our currency union with an economic union."
