Transatlantic Outreach Program

The focus of the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) is to provide a modern view of Germany in U.S. schools. The program is supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the Goethe-Institut, Deutsche Bank and the Siemens Corporation. Through its study tours, professional development workshops, and teaching materials, TOP provides North American Social Studies teachers and education experts with a direct insight into German society. After their return home, the participants pass on their knowledge and experiences to their colleagues as well as to their students. They promote intercultural dialog and a modern view of Germany. So far, more than 1,000 educators have participated in TOP. In addition to this group, there is a group of high-ranking decision makers working in the field of education, who are invited to Germany to learn more about its educational system.
Participants visiting Stuttgart in October 2014
During their study tour in October 2014, a group of American education experts visited Stuttgart. Their visit included a workshop at the Robert Bosch Stiftung where participants discussed Germany’s dual apprenticeship system and the chances of implementing a similar system in the United States. The lively discussion was led by German panelists Knut Becker from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, and Dr. Martin Frädrich from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Stuttgart, who provided the group with data on and practical examples of dual apprenticeship in Germany. After the workshop, Dr. Ingrid Hamm, CEO of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, invited participants to a joint working lunch.

The visit to Stuttgart also included a trip to the Bosch factory in Feuerbach where the group learned more about different types of dual apprenticeship at Bosch. Other stops on their one-week study tour included Munich and Frankfurt.
