Awards "Living well with Dementia in the Community"

European Foundations‘ Initiative on Dementia

The European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia (EFID) – which consists of Atlantic Philanthropies, Fondation Médéric Alzheimer, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the King Baudouin Foundation, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung – jointly present an award called “Living well with Dementia in the Community.” The aim of the initiative is to improve the quality of life for people with dementia as well as their environment.

The responsibility of caring for people with dementia cannot be borne by family members and professional nurses and support workers alone. There is also a need for a social structure that accommodates people with dementia and that allows them to participate in community life. This depends on the commitment of local authorities and civil society.

The initiative is coordinated and managed by the Network of European Foundations (NEF).

2014 award ceremony

On March 25, 2014, the European Foundations’ Initiative on Dementia (EFID) presented the “Living well with Dementia in the Community” award in Brussels for the second time. From the 52 applications submitted, an independent jury selected ten award-winning projects from eight European countries, each of which received €10,000. The prizes were awarded to good, transferable practical projects that improve the situation of people with dementia through activities in civil society, benefiting their environment and encouraging others to follow suit. Such initiatives enhance the quality of life of people with dementia and their environment while promoting active participation in local community life.

Three of the prizewinners are from Germany: the city of Arnsberg with the project “Lernwerkstadt Demenz” together with the associations “Konfetti im Kopf” and “Nachbarschaftliche Unterstützung und Zeitvorsorge”.

More information about these and the seven other winning projects can be found in the press release.
