In January 2003, when I decided to make a film based on a text by Franz Kafka, I knew that I wanted to do some of the filming in the Bohemian mountains rather than only cooperating with Czech filmmakers. As I read the text, I could almost see this marvelous landscape, which Caspar David Friedrich visited from Dresden to paint, in my mind's eye. I made several research trips into the region between Ustek, Litomerice, and Terezin, where I found many traces of German settlement and the farm that was to become the set for the "Pictures of the Defense of a Farm" in the film.
