The Research and Study Program on Education in Early Childhood

A program to train excellent young academics for research and teaching in the field of early childhood education.

The critical role early childhood education, child care, and upbringing play in a child’s personal development is now undisputed – the first years are decisive! This is why successfully designing early childhood education processes and child-care concepts also requires scientific observation and development.

Research and teaching in the area of early childhood education have advanced rapidly since the establishment of the first related degree programs, and German colleges and universities now offer more than 100 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs on the subject. This development has been accompanied by a significant lack of qualified early-childhood specialists active in research and teaching, however.

In order to better utilize the potential offered by extremely well-trained specialists in science and research of early childhood education, in 2009 the Robert Bosch Stiftung first accepted applications for the Education in Early Childhood Research and Study Program. This program, now in its fourth year, offers 15 excellent young academics the chance to participate in a comprehensive, advanced training program to professionalize instruction and increase qualifications in this new field.

Alongside working on their final project (either a doctoral or post-doctoral thesis), the young academics will also take part in numerous individually tailored, advanced training seminars (modules) focused on a variety of early childhood education aspects over a period of 24 months.

The program ended in December 2014. Applications are no longer possible.
