Robert Bosch Cultural Managers

Since 2002, the Robert Bosch Stiftung has promoted cultural exchange within Europe by sending selected fellows to foreign cultural institutions. While 18 German fellows travel to cultural institutions in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe for two years, 12 fellows from the entire region come to Germany each year for a period of 13 months. In addition, four cultural managers from Germany are sent to cultural institutions in the Arab world.

The cultural managers design and organize cultural and educational events, act as contact persons for the arts scene and cultural institutions in their home countries, and connect artists and institutions. They work within their guest institutions’ local teams and become acquainted with daily working life in another country. In addition to their industry-specific knowledge, they also incorporate their contacts into the collaborative work and help create international networks of the institutions. Through innovative projects they offer young artists opportunities to present their work in a foreign country and convey a contemporary image of their home country - for example, a modern image of Germany in Kosovo or a multifaceted image of Russia in Germany.

Through their project work at the cultural institutions and regular training seminars, the cultural managers gain the qualifications needed to carry out management duties in international cultural exchanges. The training program covers core competencies relating to cultural management, seminars on personal management skills, and modules on cultural competence.

After completing the program, the cultural managers work in cultural organizations throughout Europe and also remain in touch with each other and with the foundation. Currently the "Cultural Managers from Central and Eastern Europe" program has 85 alumni, the "Robert Bosch Cultural Managers in Central and Eastern Europe" program has 48 alumni, the "Robert Bosch Cultural Managers in the Arab World" program has 11 alumni, and the "Robert Bosch Cultural Managers in the Russian Federation" program has 3 alumni.

The network also includes the fellows’ former host institutions.

The Cultural Managers programs are carried out by the Robert Bosch Stiftung in cooperation with MitOst e.V. Berlin (The Association of Language and Cultural Exchange in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe), the Eastern Europe Centre at the Universität Hohenheim (Hohenheim University), and the Goethe-Institut.
