"Journalistenpreis Bürgerschaftliches Engagement 2008"
Awarded in the categories Print, Radio and TV for the first time
Stuttgart, October 29, 2008 – This year, the "Journalistenpreis Bürgerschaftliches Engagement" presented by the Robert Bosch Stiftung will be awarded in three categories for the first time. In doing so, the foundation recognizes the increased significance of civil engagement in society, which is more important than ever for social cohesion and a lively democracy. Therefore the journalists' prize, which has been awarded in the field of print media since 1998, will now also be awarded in the categories Radio and Television. Online journalists were also able to participate for the first time. The total prize money is € 35,000.
The 2008 award winners are Lorenz Wagner, Editor at Financial Times Deutschland (Print), Regine Beyer, author for Südwestrundfunk (Radio) and Till Oeppert, author for Radio Bremen (TV). Each category award includes a € 10,000 cash prize. The Marion-Dönhoff-Förderpreis for young journalists worth € 5,000 goes to Kerstin Eigendorf, Editor at the Westfalenpost. 138 print entries, 39 radio entries and 65 TV entries were submitted.
In "Die zwei Leben des Herrn S.", Lorenz Wagner reports on a successful Internet pioneer who fights his way back into life after a serious motorcycle accident, before founding the MyHandicap foundation that helps disabled people manage their lives. The article was published in Financial Times Deutschland on December 21, 2007.
In her series "Bürger machen Politik", Kerstin Eigendorf presents people whose voluntary commitment ensures that a local swimming pool is not closed, a public footpath is lit at night or a dilapidated railway station is converted into an arts center. The 13 reports appeared in the Westfalenpost between January 29 and March 29, 2008.
In her radio feature "Als die Nachbarin im Treppenhaus saß", Regine Beyer tells the story of her own unusual neighborly help and how life can take on a new quality as a result. The report was broadcast on SWR 2 on December 6, 2007.
In his film "Durchboxen", Till Oeppert presents the voluntary work of a coach who successfully takes problem youths off the streets and puts them into the boxing ring, teaching them about discipline and the need for good school grades. The film was produced by Radio Bremen and broadcast on ARD ("Exklusiv") on August 29, 2007.
Three expert juries, each chaired by Gerd Appenzeller, Der Tagesspiegel, selected the award winners.
