Harald Weinrich
Honorary Endowment of the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize 2002
After serving in World War II and returning home from captivity, Weinrich studied Romance Languages and Literature, German Studies, and Philosophy in Münster, Freiburg, Toulouse and Madrid. He earned his PhD in 1954 and his postdoctoral lecturing qualification in 1958 in Münster. He was Professor of Romance Languages and Literature in Kiel (1959–1965) and Cologne (1965–1969), co-founder of the University of Bielefeld, and the first director of the Bielefeld Center for Interdisciplinary Research (1972–1974) in addition to holding the chair of Linguistics (1969–1978). Subsequently he was professor of German as a Foreign Language in Munich until 1992 and then at the Collège de France, Paris from 1992 until he became emeritus in 1998. He was a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin (1987/88), visiting professor at the universities of Michigan (1963/64) and Princeton (1978), and held the Galilei Chair at the "Scuola Normale Superiore" in Pisa (1992/93). Harald Weinrich received numerous prizes and awards, including honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bielefeld, Heidelberg, Augsburg, Rome, and Madrid. The Adelbert von Chamisso Prize was founded in response to a suggestion from Harald Weinreich. His long-standing dedication was honored in 2002 with the Honorary Endowment of the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize.
