FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the lectureship program offer lectureships?
You can find an overview of available lectureships by visiting www.lektoren.net. The lectureships available for the 2012/2013 academic year will not be finalized until March 2012.

Can I apply for a lectureship at a university that is not on the list?
Generally speaking, applications are open both to university graduates applying for a lectureship as well as universities applying for a lecturer until February 28, 2012. We receive about 20 new applications from universities each year. The program’s space for new lectureships is limited, however. If you are in contact with a specific university, you are welcome to draw their attention to the possibility of applying to set up a new lectureship at their institution. You will find a link to additional information and the application form for host universities on the right side of this page. If the university submits an application, the decision whether to approve it will be made by March 15, 2012. In any case, you must apply to the lectureship program before the deadline of February 28, 2012.

Can I teach a subject that is not listed in the program?
If your preferred subject is in the social sciences, liberal arts, law or economics, your application can be considered subject to demand from universities in Eastern Europe or China. Since the program is designed to support the liberal arts and social sciences in Eastern Europe and China, we regret that we cannot offer lectureships in scientific fields (including medicine). However, you may apply for a lectureship in “German as a Foreign Language” independently of your university degree.

I don’t graduate until spring/summer 2012. Can I still apply for a lectureship in the 2012/13 academic year?
As a condition of your application, you must be able to provide proof of graduation at the date of visa application, i.e. in the beginning of June. In principle, a bachelor’s degree is sufficient for applying to the program.

Is it true that the program is only open to applicants under 35 years of age?
Generally speaking, there is no age limit. Nevertheless, the lectureship program was designed for young, recent college graduates – that is to say, those who have received a degree within the last five years.

I am not a German citizen – can I apply anyway?
German citizenship is not a prerequisite for applying. Applications are open to all university graduates who graduated from a secondary school in Germany (or Switzerland / Austria) and speak German at native speaker level.

Can I apply even if I do not yet speak the language of my host country?
Yes, you can apply without speaking the language of your chosen host country. The only areas for which we expect basic language proficiency are Russian-speaking countries and China; however, lecturers will receive further language tuition in summer 2012 in these languages. We expect you to engage in intensive study of the language and culture of your host country once you arrive. Limited additional funds are available for language courses.

How high is stipend provided? What other costs will be covered by the Robert Bosch Stiftung’s lectureship program?
Please refer to the overview of our services in the Grant Conditions (link on the right side of the page).

How many applications do you receive each year? What are my chances being accepted if I apply?
We receive approximately 300 applications for each academic year. However, not all applicants are actually suited to working as a lecturer at a university in Eastern Europe or China. In addition, the chances of being accepted also vary considerably between the different regions. This is due in part to the number of new lectureships to be filled and the preferences (teaching subjects and projects) of the host universities as well as applicants.

How do I apply?
Applications may only be submitted using Robert Bosch Stiftung’s online application website (link on the right side of the page).
The deadline for applications for the 2012/13 academic year is February 28, 2012. Should you have problems accessing our website from December 1, 2011 onwards, please send a brief e-mail to: oez@boschlektoren.de
