Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence
Since 2007, the Robert Bosch Stiftung in partnership with DIE ERSTE österreichische Spar-Casse Privatstiftung, Vienna, and Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), Sarajevo, runs a program for journalists from Southeastern Europe. Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany, and DerStandard, Austria, are Media Partners.
Journalists are invited to submit their research proposals. An international Selection Committee will competitively choose the ten most promising projects. In the course of the fellowship year the participants will conduct field research in countries of the European Union as well as in their Southeastern European neighbor countries. Experienced journalists will mentor each fellow during the research period. Seminars in Vienna and Southeastern Europe cover methodologies as well as standards of journalism and will provide the chance to interview decision makers from politics, media and academia. At the end of the program the Selection Committee will award the best contribution of all published reports. The thematic focus of each year of the program is different.
Topic of the 2012 Fellowship is "Communities".
The aim is to enhance the knowledge and the coverage about European issues in Southeastern Europe and to foster dialog between journalists in the region. Journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia can apply to this program. Participants need the permission of their employer.
The program of 2012 will start with a seminar in Vienna in April 2012.
