György Dalos:

1956. Der Aufstand in Ungarn

I began researching my book in January 2005. The aim was to offer the German public an impression of the events five decades ago, which form part of a typically Central European history that is even hard to communicate to the young generation in my own country today. I conducted many interviews with eye witnesses and historians in Berlin. In Vienna, I spoke with exiled Hungarians who fled the country in November 1956 and studied the press coverage of the time in the National Library. Magnum photographer Erich Lessing provided original photos of Budapest from fall 1956. In Budapest, I researched in the “56 Institute” and talked to Péter Kende, György Litván, Imre Mécs and Aliz Halda. I produced a narrative instead of processing the results of my research and stimulating discussions in a scientific or documentary form.
The German political education institute Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung has already published a special edition. An Italian translation has been published, while an Estonian edition is currently being prepared.
